ABC/Disney being shut-out by Sinclair Broadcast Group due to "politics" of Nightline roll call of dead.

ABC News will devote Friday’s “Nightline” to a solemn roll call of U.S. service people killed in Iraq under the title “The Fallen”.

Nightline Executive Producer Leroy Sievers said, “We see these guys in helmets and vests, and they all look the same. Whether you agree with the war or not, these men and women are over there in our names and died in our names. We're not trying to make a statement other than that all these people are individuals,"

However, Sinclair Broadcast Group has ordered its ABC affiliates to preempt tomorrow’s broadcast saying that ABC, through its Nightline program, was disguising political statements as news content. Sinclair released a statement to the press , ``Despite the denials by a spokeswoman for the show, the action appears to be motivated by a political agenda designed to undermine the efforts of the United States in Iraq”.

However, it appears that the real political agenda lies in the numbers. According to the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics, Sinclair executives have donated more than $16,000 in hard money and more than $120,000 in soft money to President Bush and his allies since 2000.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Pennsylvania)

August 17, 1996, Saturday, SOONER EDITION

David D. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Sinclair Broadcast Group, was arrested this week in his hometown of Baltimore and charged with a misdemeanor sex offense. Sinclair owns WPGH, the Fox affiliate in Pittsburgh, and programs most of WPTT.

"The Baltimore Sun reported that Smith, 45, was arrested Tuesday night in an undercover sting at a downtown corner frequented by prostitutes.

On Thursday night, Sinclair issued a statement that Smith's arrest was unrelated to company business and 'The company will continue to operate under the direction of its current management.'"

Oh those Republic values.
